第62講座　『関係副詞』関係副詞の考え方2

〇the way S + V

例文で考えてみます。
慣用的分詞構文judging from A「Aから判断すると」のA位置に、the way S + V。

例題　彼の話し方から判断すると、大阪生まれではないと思います。四天王寺大

(the , he , from , speaks , way , judging ), I’m sure he is not a native of Osaka.

→（Judging from the way he speaks）, I’m sure he is not a native of Osaka.

〇関係副詞の先行詞の省略　whereの場合

関係副詞の先行詞が省略され、関係副詞で始まる節が結果として名詞節の働きをする場合がある。

例題　その本を読んでしまったら、元の場所へ返しておいてください。西南学院大

Put the book back (was , when , where , to , you’re , it )

→Put the book back（to where it was when you’re）through with it.

※この例題の場合はto の後ろにthe placeが省略されている。

 

プラスの知識　関係副詞whenとwhyはその先行詞がthe timeやthe reasonといった典型的な語であれば、先行詞が省略される場合があるだけではなく、先行詞を残して関係副詞when、whyの方が省略されることもある。

〇関係副詞whyの先行詞の省略　That is why…

先行詞the reasonを省略して、That is why …「そういうわけで…（それが…する理由だ）」の表現を作る。

例題

a)I don’t like him. That is because he is always saying bad things about other people.静岡県立大短大

b)He is always saying bad things about other people. That (     )(     )I don’t like him.

→is , why

訳：a私は彼が好きではない。それはいつも人の悪口を言ってばかりいるからだ。

b彼はいつも他人の悪口ばかり言っている。そういうわけで、私は彼を好きではない。
