『原級比較の基本と倍数表現』

「not as [so]+原級+as…」…ほど～ではない

as+原級+as…は「…と同じくらい～」の意味。その否定形not as[so]+原級+as…は…ほど～ではない、という意味。

例題
彼は見かけほど年をとっていない。鹿児島大
He is ( ) as ( ) ( ) he looks.

正解 not , old as

プラスの知識

not as [so]+原級+as…は比較級表現の「less+原級+than…」…ほど～ではない、と同意表現であることを押さえておこう。
lessの後には言及が来ることに注意！

例文
「その当時、サトウは塩ほど価値が無かった。」
In those days sugar was not as[so] valuable as salt.
In those days sugar was less valuable than salt.

「not as much + 名詞 + as…」

ここはいきなり例題

例題
私の兄はあなたよりも長時間働いていますが、お金はあなたほど稼いでいません。関東学院大
My brother works longer but doesn’t earn (money , as , do ,as, you , much).

正解My brother works longer but doesn’t earn (as much money as you do).
注　money as much as you doはダメ。(he) earns much moneyとは言えないからです

「…time as + 原級+ as A」Aの…倍～
倍数表現は…time as + 原級+ as Aの形で表す。

例題
The new factory (time , large as, as ,three , is) the old one.愛知大

正解　The new factory (is three time as large as) the old one.

プラスの知識

twice as + 原級+ as A「Aの2倍～」、half as +原級 + as A「Aの半分～」も覚えておくこと。
分数 + as + 原級 + as、で割合を示す表現がある。

トムは私の2/3の数の切手を集めている。
Tom has collected two-thirds as many as I have.

「twice the + 名詞 + of A = twice as + 原級 + as A」

twice as + 原級 + as A「Aの2倍～」は「twice the + 名詞 + of A」で表現が可能。

例題
A)This pole is twice as long as that one over there.日本工大
B)This pole is ( ) that one over there.

half as + 原級+as A=half the +原級 + of A
… times as 原級 as A = …times the 名詞 of A
注　これらの「the + 名詞」の形で用いることのできる名詞は、長さ（length）、大きさ（saize）、
重さ（weight）、数（number）などに限られているので英作文では避けた方が良い。

「twice the number of A」「Aの2倍の数」

『原級を用いた慣用表現』

「as 原級 as possible /出来るだけ…」= as 原級 as S can

「not so much as do」…さへしない

彼はサヨナラさへも言わないで出発した。He departed without so much as saying good-bye.

「as 原級 as ever lived」古来稀な、並はずれた…

as 原級 as ever 動詞の過去形、はこれまでに～したどれにも勝るとも劣らず、といった最上級に近い意味を表す。
as 原級 as ever livedは成句表現、「古来稀な、並はずれた…←これまでに生きた誰にも勝るとも劣らず…」の意を表す。
as [so / too / how]+形容詞+a+名詞、の語順も必ず押さえておくこと。

例題
He is as great a scholar ( ).工学院大
①as ever lived ②than has ever lived ③who never lived ④as has never lived

正解　①　彼は歴史上並はずれた学者である。

知識の整理　その他の言及を用いた表現

1.as 原級as any (+名詞)　「どの～にも劣らず」
This bag is as good as any I have used. 「このバッグは私が使ったどのバッグにも劣らず良い」
※最上級の意味に近くなることに注意

2.as many A（Ａは複数名詞）「同数のＡ」
She found five mistakes in as many lines.
彼女は5行で5か所の間違いを見つけた。

3.as many as A（Ａは数詞+複数名詞）「Ａも（多くの）」
He can memorize as many as 50 numbers at a time.
彼は一度に50もの数字を記憶することができる。
注　Ａが数的に多いことを表す。

4.as much as A 「Ａも（多くの）」
Some baseball players earns as much as three million dollars a year.
1年に300万ドルも稼ぐ野球選手もいる。
注　as many as Aと同意の表現ですが、Ａが「量」的に多いことを表すために、Ａには金額・重さなどを表す名詞が来ることに注意！

5.like so many A（Aは複数名詞）「さながらAのように」
The boys were swimming in the pond like so many frogs.
少年たちはさながらカエルのように泳いでいた。

『比較級表現の基本』

「muchの用法」比較級強調表現

muchには比較級強調表現としての用法があり、比較級の前に置いて「はるかに・・・」の意味を成す。

例題
Let’s buy this one. It’s ( ) cheaper.駒沢大
①much ②very ③too ④more

正解①　こちらのを買いましょう。それはずっとやっすいです。

知識の整理　比較級・最上級の強調表現

1.比較級の強調表現
[ much , far , still , even , by far , a lot , a great(good) deal ]

2.最上級の強調表現
[ by far , much , far , very ]
注：veryは「the very ＋　最上級 （＋名詞）」の語順になることに注意

She is by far the best singer in her class. = She is the very best singer in her class.
彼女は抜群に歌がうまい。

「less + 原級 + than…」「…ほど～ではない」＝not so[as] + 原級 + as

例題
a)John is not diligent as his elder brother.駒沢大
b) John is ( ) diligent ( ) his elder brother.

正解 less , than ジョンは兄ほど勤勉ではない

「more + 原級 + than + 原級」

同じ人物（物）などの異なる性質を比べる時は「more + A（原級） + than + B（原級）」、BというよりはむしろA、を用いる。

例題
He is ( ) than clever.愛知淑徳大
①more wise ②wiser ③wise ④the most wise

正解①　彼は賢いというよりも賢明である。

「the + 比較級 + of the two」2つの中で…より

the + 比較級 + of the two（+複数名詞）の形で「2つ（2人）の中でより…」の意味を表す。
「2つ（2人）の中でより…」という場合は、それ自体が特定のものになるので、比較級の前に定冠詞のtheを付けます。

例題
She bought ( ) of the two books.亜細亜大
①cheapest ②the cheaper ③cheaper ④the cheapest

正解②　彼女は2冊の本の中で安い方を買った。

『定式化された比較級表現』

「the 比較級…，the 比較級…」…すればするほど、ますます…

例題
The more I thought about it, ( ) certain I became that Jekyll was mad.長岡造形大

正解　②　私はそのことについて考えれば考えるほどますます、ジキルがくるっているとますます確信するようになった。

例題

「（all） the + 比較級 + for + 名詞」…なのでそれだけ～

（all） the + 比較級 + for + 名詞[because S + V…]で「…なのでそれだけ～」の意味を表す。

例題
She says she loves him all ( ) for his character.防衛大学校

①more ②less ③the more ④the most

正解③　彼女は彼の性格のためよりいっそう彼を愛しているといいます。

注：(all) the 比較級はfor+名詞やbecause節の代わりに分詞構文やbecause ofなどの群前置詞、when節など。様々な形に対応して用いられます。
Allが省略されることもあるので要注意！

「none the + 比較級 + for + 名詞」

none the + 比較級 + for + 名詞[because S + V…]で「だからと言って少しも～ない」という意味。
none the + 比較級はall the + 比較級 の否定形と考えればよい。

例題
A good tale is none the ( ) for being twice told.青山学院大
①least ②worse ③excellence ④good

正解②　よい物語は2度語られたからといって少しも悪くならない。

「A is no more B than C is D」CがDではないよいうにAはBではない

A is no more B than C is D、動詞はbe動詞とは限りませんが、be動詞で代表させておきます。
「CがDではないよいうにAはBではない／AがBではないのはCがDではないのと同様である。」の意味。
B、Dに形容詞、副詞以外に名詞を用いるのがA is no more B than C is Dである。
比較級の否定語のnoの働きからA is B = C is Dが成り立ち、moreは肯定表現なので、意味的には否定的な立場から述べることになります。
なので、「CがDでないようにAはBでない」と言った意味になる。

例題
Even the brightest of chimpanzees can no ( ) speak than they can fly.東京薬大
①less ②least ③more ④most

正解③どんなに賢いチンパンジーであっても話すことができないのは彼らが飛ぶことができないのと同様である。

ややこしいので少し「整理」しておこう！

「not + 比較級 + than + A」と「no + 比較級 + than + A」の違い
not + 比較級 + than + Aは「Aより‥‥ということはない」の意味で、Aと同等かそれ以下という比較の差を表す比較級ですが、強い否定の意味を持つnoを用いたno + 比較級 + than + Aでは、「no + 比較級」が「まったく‥‥ない」といった意味を表す。

そのためthan以下は、比較の対象を示す対象としてではなく、「no + 比較級」の内容をより明白にする役割を果たします。

例えば、The stone is no bigger than a golf ball.
→「その石がゴルフボールより大きいなんてとんでもない。」
→「その石はゴルフボールと同じくらい小さい。」= The stone is as small as a golf ball.
→「その石はゴルフボールぐらいの大きさしかない。」

結論
no + 比較級 + than + Aのnoは…
比較の差を0にする。後ろの語を意味的に否定すると考えればよい。

「A is not B any more than C is D」

A is not B any more than C is DはA is no more B than C is Dの同意表現。
noがnotとanyに分かれた形。

例題
Work is not the only object in life ( ) play is.明治学院大
①any more than ②more or less than ③more than ④no less than

正解①　仕事が人生の単なる目的でないのは、遊びがそうでないのと同様である。

「A is no less B than C is D」CがDであるようにAはBである

A is no less B than C is D「CがDであるようにAはBである／AがBなのはCがDなのと同じである」を使う。

noの働きからA is B = C is Dが成り立ち、lessは否定表現なので二重否定の意味が生じ、肯定的な立場から述べることになります。

例題
良い友人との付き合いは、お金を稼ぐのと同様に大切なことである。龍谷大
Making ( important , friends , than , less , is , good , making , no ) money.

正解Making ( good friends is no less important than making ) money.

「no less than A」Aも（たくさん）

no less than Aは「Aも（たくさん）」の意味。as many asとほぼ同意。

例題
According to the newspaper, ( ) one million people visited the museum last month.近畿大
①no less ②no less than ③no more ④not any more

正解②　新聞によれば、百万人もの人たちが先月博物館を訪問したそうだ。

「not less than A」少なくともA

not less than Aは「少なくともA」の意味を表す。at least Aとほぼ同じ。

例題
I was surprised that he had a lot of books.皇学館大
There were ( ) five thousand books in his history.

①no more than ②not less than ③no more than ④at most

正解②　彼が多くの本を持っていることに驚いた。彼の書斎には少なくとも5000冊の本があった。

知識を整理しておこう！

ここは既述の『ややこしいので少し「整理」しておこう！』が分かっていれば大丈夫です。
・not more than A「おおくともA←A以上ではない」= at most A
・not less than A「少なくともA←A以下ではない」= at least A
・no more than A「わずかA／Aしか‥‥ない←Aと同じだが、moreの反対という視点から」= only A
・no less than A「Aも（たくさん）←Aと同じだが、lessの反対という視点から」= as many as A（数の場合）、as much as A（量の場合）

『その他の慣用的な比較表現』

「more than A」Aより多い

ここはいきなり例題

例題
この薬は1日に2回までしか飲んではいけません。中央大
Don’t take this medicine (than , day , more , a , twice).

正解Don’t take this medicine (more than twice a day ).
成句表現のmore thanの後ろにtwice a day を続ける。a day のaは「～につき」＝「per」の意味。

「less than A」A足らずの←Aより少ない

例題
彼女はその本を1時間もしないうちに読み終えた。帝京大
She (reading , in , book , than , finished , our , less , the , an).

正解She (finished reading the book in less than an hour ).
ここでのinは経過を表す前置詞として使用。in an hourとしないように注意すること。

「B rather than A」AというよりはむしろB

例題
Of course he is quite a good writer, but he is a journalist ( ) than a scholar.京産大
①better ②either ③further ④rather

正解④　もちろん彼は良い作家ですが、学者というよりはジャーナリストです。

※not so much A as Bの同意表現

「know better than to do」～するほど愚かでない

例題
彼はそんな話を信じるほど愚かではない。（1語不要）東京理科大
He (believe , better , doesn’t , knows , than , to) such a story.

正解He (knows better than to believe) such a story.　 doesn’tが不要

「, much less…」…は言うまでもなく／ましてや…ない

, much less…は、否定文・否定的内容の文の後に続けて、「…は言うまでもなく／ましてや…ない」の意味。「, still less…」も同じ意味。

プラスの知識

肯定文に続ける場合は「, much more…」を用いるが、その使い方は現在ではまれである。

例題
I didn’t even speak to her, ( ) discuss your personal problems with her.昭和女子大
①much less ②still more ③much more ④less than

『ラテン比較級』

次のラテン語に由来する形容詞は、比較対象を示すのにthanではなくtoを用いることに注意する。

「be superior to A」Aより優れている

例題
a)This car is better in design than that one.実践女子大
b)This car is ( ) in design to that one.

正解　superior この車はあの車よりデザインの点で優れている。

「be senior to A」Aより年上だ

例題
a)He is tree older than I.四天王寺大
b)He is three years ( ) to me.

正解　senior　彼は私より3歳年上です。

「prefer A to B」BよりもAを好む

動詞のpreferもラテン語が語源。prefer A to BのA、Bには名詞または動名詞が来る。
preferの過去形はpreferredになることに注意する。

プラスの知識　この形容詞を用いたbe preferable to A「Aより好ましい」も覚えよう。
例題
Most children prefer playing ( ) studying.札幌大
①than ②to ③for ④in

正解②　ほとんどの子どもは勉強よりも遊ぶことを好む。

『最上級を用いた表現』

「S is the + 最上級+名詞 + of A（複数名詞）」SはAの中で最も…の～だ

▶形容詞の最上級が名詞を修飾する場合には、必ずtheが付くことに注意。
▶「Aの中で」を表す時に、Aが構成要素を表す複数名詞の場合はof A となるが、Aが範囲を表す単数名詞の場合はin Aとなる。
He is the best swimmer in his class.彼はクラスで一番うまい水泳者だ。

例題
Of the three sisters, Jane was ( ) singer.獨協大
①the better ②a better ③the best ④a best

正解　③　３人の姉妹の中で、ジェーンが一番上手な歌手です。

「最上級強調のby far」

▶by farには最上級の強調の用法がある。最上級の前に置いて「ずば抜けて…／飛び切り…」の意味。

例題
This movie is ( ) far the most interesting of all.東海大
①too ②by ③much ④very

正解 ②　この映画は全ての中で飛びぬけて面白いです。

「最上級強調のmuchの用法」

▶by far と同様にmuchも最上級強調表現の用法がある。

例題
Susan is ( ) student in her class.学習院女子大
①much best ②much the best ③the much best ④very the best

正解②　スーザンはクラスの中で突出して良い生徒です。

プラスαの知識

veryにも最上級を強調する表現があります。使う時は「the very 最上級（＋名詞）」お語順なので注意する。
the very bestなら可。

「the + 最上級 + 名詞 +（that） S have ever done」Sが今までに～した中で最も…
▶thatは目的格の関係代名詞で、省略されることもある。
▶ever「今までに」通常は肯定文では用いないが例外的に用いることがある。

例題
This is ( ) beautiful scene I’ve ever seen.岩手医科大
①much more ②much less ③prettier than ④the most

正解④　これは私が今までに見た一番美しい景色です。

例題
これは私が今までで読んだ中で最も難しい小説です。拓殖大
This is (that , ever , most , the , novel , I , difficult , have ) read.

「the + 序数 +最上級」…番目に～

例題
Los Angeles is ( ) city in the United States.専修大
①the second largest ②the largest next ③the second larger ④the next larger

正解①ロスアンゼルスは合衆国で二番目に大きな都市です。

「one of the + 最上級+複数名詞 」最も…な～の中の1つ

one of the + 最上級の後ろは必ず複数名詞であることに注意。

例題
A Rolls-Royce is one in the world.拓殖大
①of the most expensive car ②of the most expensive cars
③of more expensive car ④of more expensive cars

正解　②　ロールスロイスは世界の中で最も高価な自動車の１つです。

「at most」せいぜい、多くとも

例題
It’s almost two o’clock so we have only ten more minutes ( ).センター試験
①at first ②at last ③at least ④at most

正解　④　もうすぐ2時なので私たちには多くても10分しか残されていません。
at first「初めは、最初は」　 at last「ついに、とうとう」　 at least「少なくとも」は重要イディオムとして覚えておこう！

『最上級の意味を表す原級・比較級表現』

「A be動詞[一般動詞]＋比較級＋than any other ＋単数名詞」Aは他のどんな～よりも…

比較表現で最上級の意味を表す定型化された表現。anyは「どんな…でも」

例題
Tom is taller than ( )in the class.近畿大
①any other student ②other any student ③the other students ④any other students

正解　①　トムはクラスの中で他のどんな生徒よりも背が高いです。

「No (other)＋名詞＋is so [as] A」Aほど…な～かはない

原級表現で最上級の意味を表す定式化された表現。A be動詞[一般動詞]＋比較級＋than any other ＋単数名詞と同意。

プラスの知識(@^^)/~~~

比較対象が同一の範疇でない場合はotherは使えない。例えば・・・
No city in Europe is so populous as Tokyo.　東京ほど人口の多い都市はヨーロッパにはない。

例題
a)Osaka has more bridges than any other city in Japan.
b)No other city in Japan has ( ) many bridges ( ) Osaka.西南学院大

a)大阪は日本の他のどんな都市よりも橋が多くあります。

「No (other) ＋名詞　＋is　＋比較級　＋than A」Aより…な～はない

以下の形でしっかり押さえること😊
No (other) ＋名詞　＋is　＋比較級　＋than A
= No (other) ＋名詞　＋is　＋so[as]＋原級＋as A
= A be動詞[一般動詞]＋比較級＋than any other ＋単数名詞

a)彼は彼のクラスの中で一番背の高い少年です。
b)彼のクラスの中で他の少年は彼より背は高くない。

「Nothing is so[as] ＋原級＋as A」Aほど…なものはない」

no other　名詞の代わりにnothingを用いた原級表現。最上級の意味を表す定式化された表現。

=There is nothing so[as]＋原級＋as A
=Nothing is ＋比較級＋than A
=There is nothing＋比較級＋than A
=A is ＋比較級＋than anything else

整理しておこう！『最上級の意味を表す原級・比較表現』

=No other mountain is in Japan is so [as] high as Mt.Fuji.原級
= No other mountain is in Japan is higher than Mt.Fuji.比較級
=Mt.Fuji is higher than any other mountain in Japan.比較級

2.Time is the most precious thing of all.時は全ての中で最も貴重である。最上級
=Nothing is so[as] precious as time.原級
=There is nothing so[as] precious as time.原級
= Nothing is more precious than time.比較級
= There is nothing more precious than time.比較級
=Time is more precious than anything else.比較級

これで、一通り基本的なことは終了です。
比較はよく整理して覚えておかないと、並べ替えの問題などで得点を落とすことになりかねません。
